HC SVNT DRACONES: Core Extended - A Review of the Expansion for the Sci-Fi Anthro RPG
HC SVNT DRACONES (HSD) is a science fiction role-playing game that features anthropomorphic characters in a post-human solar system. The game was created by Pierce Fraser and published by Weapons Grade Funk in 2015. The core rulebook introduced the setting, the character creation system, and the basic rules for playing the game.
In 2016, Weapons Grade Funk released HC SVNT DRACONES: Core Extended (C:E), an expansion that adds more options and depth to the game. C:E is not a standalone product, and requires the core rulebook to play. C:E contains over two dozen new playable character options, new surgeries, new focus abilities and implants, additional playable races beyond Vectors (the main anthro race in HSD), and lore detail to help players and Guides (GMs) alike get a better grip on their world.
In this article, we will review the contents of C:E and how they enhance the HSD experience. We will also discuss the C:E combat addendum, a free document that changes the way combat works in HSD.
New Character Options
C:E introduces several new options for creating and customizing characters in HSD. These include:
New Vector species: C:E adds six new species of Vectors to choose from, each with their own traits and abilities. These are: Bats, Bears, Crocodilians, Elephants, Foxes, and Sharks.
New Vector subspecies: C:E also adds four new subspecies of Vectors that are hybrids of existing species. These are: Canids (dog/wolf hybrids), Felids (cat hybrids), Mustelids (weasel/otter hybrids), and Ursids (bear hybrids).
New non-Vector races: C:E expands the playable races beyond Vectors to include three other types of post-human beings. These are: Pariahs (genetically modified humans), Remnants (artificial intelligences), and TTI Hybrids (cybernetic hybrids).
New surgeries: C:E adds more than 20 new surgeries that characters can undergo to modify their bodies and abilities. These include: Bioluminescence, Chameleon Skin, Cybernetic Limbs, Enhanced Senses, Flight Systems, Nanite Clouds, Neural Jacks, and more.
New focus abilities: C:E adds more than 30 new focus abilities that characters can learn to enhance their skills and talents. These include: Animal Empathy, Combat Reflexes, Data Mining, Enhanced Memory, Hacking, Leadership, Medical Expertise, and more.
New implants: C:E adds more than 40 new implants that characters can install to augment their capabilities. These include: Adrenal Boosters, Combat Drugs, Data Storage, EMP Shielding, Gravity Manipulators, Holographic Projectors, Neural Interfaces, and more.
New Lore Detail
C:E also provides more information and detail on the setting and history of HSD. This includes:
The history of humanity's fall and the rise of Vectors.
The history and culture of each Vector species and subspecies.
The history and culture of each non-Vector race.
The history and structure of each mega-corporation.
The history and role of each faction and organization.
The history and status of each planet and moon in the solar system.
The history and nature of various threats and mysteries in the setting.
C:E Combat Addendum
C:E also includes a free document called the C:E combat addendum, which changes the way combat works in HSD. The addendum is optional, but recommended for players who want a more streamlined and dynamic combat system. The addendum introduces several changes to combat rules, such as:
A new initiative system that uses dice pools instead of static numbers.
A new action economy that allows characters to perform multiple actions per turn with varying costs.
A new damage system that uses wound levels instead of hit points.
A new armor system that reduces damage instead of increasing defense.
A new critical hit system that uses dice modifiers instead of fixed aa16f39245
